Kitchen cabinet design trends are ever-evolving. As external influences and personal preferences change, so do the needs and desires for innovative kitchen cabinet design. Examining today’s trends and how they coincide with the wants and needs of homeowners, three specific cabinet design trends stand out among Marathon Hardware customers and their clients.
Kitchen Cabinet Contemporary Aesthetic
Keeping with an on-going trend from the past few years, contemporary design is more popular than ever, pushing designers and cabinet makers in this general direction.
Cindy Wise, Co-Owner of Cabinet Lab in Toronto says to fulfill the desired contemporary look that homeowners are seeking today, they are turning to design features such as, “modern, clean lines, flat doors, less intricate details, embedded hardware in black, chrome and brass, and sophisticated mechanisms to hide certain items.”
Varun Gajendran, Marketing Director at Lucvaa Kitchens in Etobicoke echoes Cindy’s sentiment, stating that they recommend a variety of options to ensure a contemporary aesthetic, including, “integrated features like garages to hide away small appliances and countertop items, pocket doors, and embedded decorative hardware such as gola channels in order to achieve the clean look that so many homeowners desire.” He also found that “flat slab doors and a one piece look is desirable not only for its aesthetic but also its ability to easily keep clean [and presentable].”
Stephen Blackburn, General Manager, Rocpal Kitchen and Bath Studio in Oshawa says that in addition to a “clean” look, his customers also desire, “two-tone colour schemes that are paired with very unique [decorative] hardware pieces.”
These two features add character and a personal touch to the overall design and feel of a kitchen.
Natural Materials
A warm, welcoming kitchen is also highly sought after by homeowners, shifting the old mindset of cold industrial/contemporary toward an amalgamation of modern, chic design and natural materials peppered throughout to create a comfortable space for the whole family.
“Natural white oak, durable, prefinished materials from Europe, and wall cladding,” are just a few ways Cindy has seen designers and homeowners add these natural elements to homes.
The warm, natural look is also extending to the cabinet interiors according to Varun. “We’re starting to see more customers asking for different cabinet interiors from the standard white or maple print. They’re asking for linen and natural wood textures printed on melamine.” He also mentions that this new trend allows a homeowner to achieve an upscale look as well as a unique touch that sets their kitchen apart from all the rest.
Increased Functionality
Over the past year, functionality within the kitchen has become a primary focus, almost to the point of overtaking the desire for aesthetic beauty. “With the pandemic, and spending more time at home, people are noticing the things they want to change. Normally customers would ask to simply upgrade the kitchen’s aesthetics, but now we’re seeing more customers looking to change layouts and add features that increase the room’s functionality,” states Varun.
Confirming Varun’s experience with homeowners seeking functional solutions, Stephen adds, “We’re seeing a change in the functional dynamic of the kitchen. We’ve been adding office nooks and removing walls to add cabinetry so that homeowners can set up space for their children and themselves. There is also a demand for a little less cabinetry in the kitchen itself, but more throughout the entire house. The desire for outdoor spaces has escalated dramatically in the last year and the increase in millwork has naturally driven an increase in functional storage solutions.”
As these specific examples round out the top three design trends that Marathon Hardware’s customers have been experiencing, industry publications and trend-setters call for several other design trends to surge in popularity as the kitchen itself continues to evolve into a multifunctional living space.
