Where can homeowners buy decorative cabinet hardware?

Decorative cabinet hardware can be purchased through a few different channels. The type of project, budget, and desired outcome can determine where you will want to seek out the hardware that is right for you.

You can find decorative cabinet hardware in a few places:

  • a cabinet maker or kitchen company

  • specialty retailer

  • big box retail

  • online

Cabinet Maker / Kitchen Manufacturer

Purchasing hardware through a cabinet maker or kitchen company offers a large selection at a great value. Since cabinet makers and kitchen companies buy directly from distributors, the newest hardware styles and finishes are usually available.

You’re also guaranteed to save money as the markup for basic and upgraded hardware is often less than a retailer. The bread and butter of a cabinetmaker’s business is the cabinet itself, giving them less incentive to add exorbitant markups to their hardware. However, those lower prices often come with the commitment to buy an entire kitchen.

Specialty Cabinet Hardware Retailers

Specialty retailers usually carry a number of products for kitchens, bathrooms, and general renovations. Pricing can be comparable to a big box store but the larger selection offers more choice and customization. Some retailers carry a limited stock or selection of higher level hardware, but will have access to a much larger selection through their distributor. Open to homeowners and contractors alike, these stores are a fantastic alternative to big box retailers or cabinet makers since you do not have to purchase anything more than the hardware itself.

Big Box Stores

The big box store is a valid option if you are not working with a professional, a specialty retailer is not located in your town, or you only require a few inexpensive pieces. The convenience of chain stores like this is that they are everywhere, so even if you have no other choices, a big box store is never far away.

Shop for Cabinet Hardware Online

Purchases of hardware from online retailers is the least recommended option. You do have the convenience of products being delivered to your door. However, the downside is that you don’t have the opportunity to “test drive” the hardware before purchasing.

While you’re likely to find some very low prices, other downsides include, minimal selection and an obligation to buy in bulk. What are you going to do with 30 handles when you only need 6? You also fail to receive any advice from an expert should you have any questions.

In short, buying through a contractor, cabinetmaker, or kitchen company will yield the largest selection. Specialty retail is for the DIY project. Big box retail offers convenience via abundance of locations. And online retail is a last resort.
